Housing designs significantly impact their inhabitants’ wellbeing, shaping a sense of ‘home’ as a safe nurturing space or a neutral or fearful one. As architects we often aim to design beautiful, inclusive, and supportive spaces that serve their communities, yet for various reasons our ‘good designs’ often fall short of providing a feeling of safety to users, impacting their physical, emotional and mental well-being. In this session we will look at how different parts of a building can be designed to support individual safety and community wellbeing through practical, budget-conscious strategies.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss real-world examples of challenges that participants have faced with their buildings, and learn design strategies for addressing them;
  • Develop a concrete action plan of feasible improvements for projects participants are currently designing;
  • Identify strategies for designing vibrant communities while keeping their budgets in focus.
