RAIC Statement on U.S. Tariffs and Their Impact on Canadian Architectural Industry

Ottawa, March 7th 2025 – The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding U.S. tariffs and their potential impact on Canada’s architectural sector, construction industry, and broader economy.

As the national voice for architecture in Canada, the RAIC remains committed to advocating for policies that support architectural practice, promote fair trade, and protect the integrity of Canada’s built environment. The imposition of tariffs on materials, goods, and services related to construction and architecture could have significant economic and operational consequences, affecting project costs, supply chains, and market stability.

The RAIC is actively engaging with government officials, industry partners, and international stakeholders to ensure that Canadian architects and allied professionals are represented in discussions about trade policies. Our advocacy efforts focus on ensuring fair and transparent trade agreements that support the architectural and construction sectors, assessing the impact of tariffs on material costs and project feasibility—particularly in critical areas such as affordable housing, infrastructure, and sustainable building initiatives—and collaborating with industry partners, trade associations, and policymakers to mitigate disruptions and develop strategies that protect Canadian architects and their clients.

Architecture is a globally interconnected profession, and fair trade policies are essential to maintaining the competitiveness of Canadian firms operating internationally. The RAIC will continue to monitor developments, provide updates to our members, and work proactively to safeguard the interests of Canadian architects in the face of these economic challenges.

We encourage our members and industry partners to share their insights and concerns with us as we continue to advocate for a resilient and thriving architectural profession in Canada. For further information or to engage in this discussion, please contact communications@raic.org.
