2023 Candidates for Chancellor of the RAIC College

Gerrie Doyle,  PPOAA, OAA, FRAIC

Gerrie offers over 14 years of volunteering experience with both the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA). Gerrie has been instrumental in the positive changes within the RAIC through her volunteer work on various committees. While serving in various roles on the OAA Council, she served on over 10 OAA committees or task groups.

Gerrie has participated and/or chaired several RAIC committees as a “member at large”, most notably the Governance Committee and the RAIC Fee Schedule Committee. Previously (from 2007 to 2012) Gerrie served on the OAA Council as VP Practice (2007), Sr. VP/Treasurer (2008) and President for 2 terms (2009 and 2010). Through her volunteer work with the RAIC, Gerrie has been and continues to be an integral change agent and is in full support of the RAIC 2022-2024 Strategic Plan, which incorporates the RAIC’s core values of Integrity, Climate Action, Reconciliation, Social Justice and Innovation.

Many believe that Gerrie’s contribution at the strategic Board level representing the College of Fellows will complement and enhance the work required to see both the College and the RAIC’s mission and vision become the cornerstone of the architectural profession.

Graham Livesey, PhD, FRAIC

I believe that the RAIC is at an important crossroads in its history and is poised to rework itself as an organization. I have been a member of the RAIC for many years, and in 2019 became FRAIC, an honour that I very highly value. I have been an educator for over 30 years at the University of Calgary (including 9 years as head of the Program), a partner in an architectural firm, a writer on architecture and urbanism, and on the boards/councils of various organizations, including the AAA, ACSA, and CCUSA. As someone who has lived in five provinces (BC, NB, QC, AB, and ON) I feel I have a strong sense of the profession across the nation.

The Chancellor plays a vital role in the RAIC College of Fellows and on the Board of Directors. I would like the RAIC to consider how it can put its values of integrity, climate action, reconciliation, social justice, and innovation into practice in all aspects of its mandate. As Chancellor, I would endeavour to strengthen the RAIC’s advocacy efforts, focus its programs, enhance its national profile, and develop the funding of grassroots projects promoting architecture to larger audiences. Finally, I would advocate for finding ways that the RAIC can become more representative of Canadian diversity, and appeal to younger architects across the country.

Toon Dreesen, OAA, FRAIC, AIA, LEED AP

I have had the honor and privilege of serving as a member of council of the Ontario Association of Architects and as President. Through that role I became engaged in national committees including work with CExAC and national initiatives to support a future of architecture in Canada, as well as the BEFA program. Serving as Chancellor of the RAIC College of Fellows will provide an opportunity to continue a role of advocacy and leadership to help create a positive future for Canadian architects and architecture.

The College of Fellows is at a challenging crossroads, as is much of the profession. A mission to strengthen and reinforce efforts to enhance and develop the profession needs the leadership and life-long mentorship that members of the College can bring. Through our experience, our work and our roles, we can lead progressive change to ensure a healthy future for architecture. The College, and Chancellor, can help shape decisions on how we interact with society and our role in culture, to help create the equitable, inclusive and transformative society Canadians aspire to be.
