This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!
Quebec's religious heritage, with its deserted convents and monasteries, offers a unique opportunity for adaptive reuse in response to current social issues, such as the housing crisis and the needs of the elderly. These buildings, of great architectural and historical quality, are precious witnesses to our culture. However, the adaptive reuse of these buildings comes up against regulatory obstacles that make change of use complex and costly, discouraging many developers. It would be appropriate to explore different avenues to make regulations more flexible, including the creation of specialized committees, new use categories and accelerated procedures for heritage projects. Acting quickly would make it possible to preserve these witnesses to our history, while offering innovative responses to today's challenges. Should we review the spirit of our regulations before it's too late?
Describe the issues involved in converting religious and heritage buildings in Quebec into affordable housing.
Analyze the difficulties and costs associated with complying with building standards when changing the use of heritage buildings.
Interpret legislative and technical solutions to facilitate the reuse of religious buildings in Quebec.
Evaluate the social and cultural impact of the conservation or demolition of religious buildings on the preservation of Quebec's heritage.
