This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!

This session will dive into the innovative transformation of a traditional shopping mall, where vast parking lots have been re-envisioned into a vibrant, transit-oriented, mixed-use community. The project integrates millions of housing units with retail at grade along a bustling shopping high street, all while emphasizing connectivity to public transportation. By creating a pedestrian-friendly environment with accessible transit options, the design supports sustainable urban living. The community features dynamic plazas and public realm spaces, showcasing how transit-oriented developments can blend residential, commercial, and public areas into a cohesive and thriving urban fabric. Join us to explore the future of retail and urban connectivity.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the principles of transit-oriented development and how it improves connectivity while reducing car dependence in mixed-use areas like shopping malls.

  • Discuss strategies for transforming traditional retail spaces into vibrant, mixed-use communities that integrate living, working, shopping, and recreation.

  • Examine the impact of public realm design in mixed-use developments.

  • Identify key approaches to integrating housing, retail, and public spaces to create cohesive, livable environments that support diverse community needs.
