VELUX PRESENTS Primer on Fresh Air and the Value of Skylights

Industry Insiders Series

THIS SESSION FREE FOR EVERYONE!

Topics: Design / Construction

Date and Time: On Demand!

Length: 1 hour | What's included: video, quiz, certificate of completion

This 2-part series aims to provide a primer on the importance of fresh air and daylight in buildings while highlighting some considerations of how to design for a better experience for occupants with a special emphasis on daylight and fresh air from skylights. The name VELUX comes from ventilation and lux, the Latin word for light.

Part 2 – Fresh air may be invisible, but it can have a significant impact on building occupants. Part 2 of this series explores current standards and approaches as well as the benefits and options for bringing fresh air into buildings through the means of ventilation, both natural and mechanical. The webinar puts an emphasis on natural ventilation, in particular the use of operable skylights, and highlight topics such as the ideal amount of fresh air increasing due to a deeper understanding of indoor air during the pandemic.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of fresh air to our health and well-being
  • Explain how natural ventilation can be part of your fresh air strategy
  • Differentiate between code minimums and heathy ventilation levels
  • Recognize best positioning for venting skylights to optimize natural ventilation

Subject Matter Expert:

Russell Ibbotson, P.Eng, LEED AP, CTR

Technical Manager, VELUX Canada

Russell’s 20 years of experience in sustainability and healthy buildings is a nicely balanced cocktail of engineering analysis, lived experience and passion, with a hint of business acumen. After spending almost 10 years in renewable energy, Russell joined VELUX to help lead the Canadian development of better living environments with daylight and fresh air through the roof.

Russell is known for digging into the standards and the numbers but also for his keen interest in how people experience spaces. He puts great importance on correlating quantitative building performance with the qualitative experience of the occupants. Russell has participated in and supported many building projects following different building standards over the years, but Active House stands out as his favourite. Russell was the first Active House verifier in North America, he lived in Great Gulf’s Centennial Park Active House with his family in 2016 and co-chaired the 2019 Active House Symposium in Toronto.

Russell has spoken in North America and Europe about these experiences.

Russell has also made volunteering with building industry associations part of his job description. He is currently the Past-Chair of the CSC Toronto Chapter (Construction Specifications Canada) and has previously served on the board of directors for the CHBA (Canadian Home Builders’ Association) and IIBEC Southern Ontario Chapter (International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants).
