Are you a mid-career architect with an expertise in a specific area of practice but frustrated because your clients and their projects rarely allow you to apply that expertise at a high level? Are you disillusioned about the standing of our profession in society and believe that architects can and should play a bigger role in changing the world for the better? In too many cases, architectural innovation and potential is being stifled by antiquated practice models that commodify our professional skills to the lowest common denominator.
This session includes presentations by two experienced architects currently enrolled in the Doctor of Design Program who are developing new practice models, tailored to their professional expertise and architectural passions, that will expand the impact and relevance of their work.
By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain how the principals of design thinking can be applied to the business of architecture.
- Discuss how architects can leverage existing areas of expertise and expand their scope of practice to deliver new forms of value to their clients.
- Identify how innovative practice models enable architects to more fully pursue their broader architectural passions while improving their bottom line.
- Interpret how architects can leverage new models of practice to increase their impact and relevance.

Dr. John Brown

Dean, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, University of Calgary
Dr. John Brown is Professor of Architecture and Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary. He is also the Immediate Past-President of the RAIC, a practicing architect, and founding principal of the Calgary-based architectural firm Housebrand which received and RAIC Award of Excellence for Innovation in Architecture in 2003 for its unique model of residential practice. More recently, he is also the co-founder of Garden Loft, an entrepreneurial start-up offering new housing options for older adults to age-in-community that received a Mayor’s Urban Design Award in 2015 and Calgary Award for Accessibility in 2023.
Darryl Condon

Managing Principal, hcma architecture + design
Darryl Condon is interested in design that acts as a catalyst for positive social change. As Managing Principal at Vancouver-based hcma architecture + design, he has created engaging public spaces across Canada for more than 30 years, including community centres, libraries, swimming pools, ice arenas and high-performance sport facilities. Darryl’s work has been recognized internationally for its design excellence with more than 80 awards, including four World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards. He has lectured extensively across North America, South America, Europe and Australia. Most recently, these talks have focused on designing for social impact, inclusion and accessibility, the future of community recreation, and the power of transformative architectural practice. Darryl is a registered Architect, a LEED-Accredited Professional, and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He is a Past-President of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and a former Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
Barry Johns

Barry Johns Architecture Limited
Barry Johns is a multiple award winning and widely published architect in Edmonton, Alberta. He was the Chancellor of the College of Fellows, Royal Architectural Institute of Canada from 2011 – 2017 and the Director of Practice for the Alberta Association of Architects from 2015 – 2019. His career began with Arthur Erickson in Vancouver and spans private practice, teaching and public service. He is the first international recipient of the Leslie M. Boney medal from the American Institute of Architects where he is an Honorary Fellow, for outstanding service to the profession. Currently completing a Doctorate of Design (DDes) at the University of Calgary, Barry’s work examines the housing crisis in Canada. A monograph entitled Barry Johns Architects, was published by TUNS Press in 2000 and an eBook on the firm’s later work is available at www.bjalstudio.ca.
