In 2019, flooding caused infrastructure damage at the Vachon plant in Ste-Marie-de-Beauce. More than 200 employees were affected by the shutdown. The local community, which depended on the plant for its economic stability, felt the effects heavily. A real regional driving force, the suspension of activities had an impact on local suppliers and associated businesses, exacerbating the economic challenges. The flood confirmed to residents the upward trend in flooding. While many opted for compensation to relocate, Bimbo, owner of the iconic Vachon cake factory, chose to stay. Aware of the impacts on the community and the environment that relocating the factory would entail, the owners of the Vachon factory commissioned A49 + WSP to develop a solution that would increase the resilience of the existing infrastructure, rather than relocating. This session will present the project, architectural challenges, community benefits, and provide an overview of innovative integrated design practices for developing multi-criteria solutions to the challenges of climate change.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Implement proven solutions for protecting existing buildings in flood-prone areas.

  • Recognize community resilience when evaluating construction projects.

  • Implement integrated design strategies to meet the complex challenges of climate change.

  • Design resilient buildings to meet future climatic conditions.
