Women represent the majority of transit riders and experience mobility differently than others. Women are more likely to feel unsafe, more likely to travel with strollers or packages, more likely to assist family or community members, and more likely to experience harassment.
Gender-responsive planning, design, monitoring and evaluation can provide a better environment for women and others. Architects and engineers are becoming more aware of this and can use various tools to design and deliver more inclusive and equitable public spaces.
This session will look at transit architecture from a woman’s perspective. Using station design case-studies, gender-based analysis, and real-world examples, we will discuss equitable planning and transit design solutions to make these public places more inclusive for everyone.
By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the gender-based difference of how we experience and move within the public realm.
- Recognize that transit projects, at every scale from bus stop to underground station, function as public spaces and therefore their design needs to be inclusive for all users.
- Recognize how gender-responsive planning, design, monitoring and evaluation can provide a better public environment for all.
- Develop their awareness of design elements that create an equitable experience.

Ana-Francisca was responsible for the successful design and execution of transit facilities that include subways, LRTs, BRTs, and ancillary facilities. Her experience spans all project phases, from Conceptual to Construction documents and various forms of project delivery. Ana-Francisca is currently the Facilities Lead for the Technical Advisory team of the Yonge North Subway Extension, Summerhill Station and continues to expand the Transit Studio on international projects
