Urban intensification is a driving force in Canadian cities. How new developments respond to their settings and enhance public space to provide relief from a car-centric culture is of increasing importance as our urban environments grow ever denser. This presentation analyzes three new projects in Toronto that take a radical approach to re-configuring how neighbourhoods work at different scales and offers insight into creating inclusive, distinctive communities.

The Well, Artists’ Alley and King Portland Centre all emphasize public interaction within their spaces to accentuate each site’s potential for engagement and connection. These mixed-use developments all give back to their locations through public use beyond a sidewalk. They were developed through active consultation with residents, city planners and stakeholders, whose role and input will be articulated here to understand the importance of this critical component of master planning and design to contemporary Canadian urban living.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Analyze the principles and benefits of mixed-use development by examining how the integration of residential, commercial, and public spaces can revitalize urban areas and foster vibrant communities.

  • Evaluate strategies for engaging residents and stakeholders in the planning and development process to determine how these approaches contribute to meeting community needs and ensuring long-term project success.

  • Design urban spaces that promote community well-being, inclusivity, and social interaction by applying best practices aligned with the values and needs of diverse populations.

  • Develop approaches to enhance connectivity between public spaces by creating seamless transitions among parks, plazas, and transit hubs that encourage exploration and use of urban environments.

Subject Matter Expert:

Michael Conway
B.Arch, Dip-Arch Tech, OAA, MRAIC
Associate Partner, Hariri Pontarini Architects

Michael Conway has extensive experience in developing designs for large, urban mixed-use projects. He applies skill and passion to seamlessly weave new developments into the existing fabric of neighbourhoods and cities in which he works. Conway’s recent projects stand as testament to his versatility and ability to navigate the challenges posed by complex urban sites, including The Well, a 7.7-acre mixed-use development that creates a new district in the heart of downtown Toronto; the CTBUH award-winning King Portland Centre, a 40,692sm (438,000sf) commercial and residential development; and the Galleria Mall Redevelopment, a project that will convert the 306,580sm (3.3m sf) site of an existing mall into a complete, connected and pedestrian-friendly community.
