The twin challenges of COVID-19 and climate change set a context, for historically-significant and near-term public infrastructure investment decisions that need to reflect long-term considerations. These decisions aim to deliver maximum value through 'multi-solving' and provide affordable, reliable infrastructure services (e.g. transportation and energy systems, water and waste management, buildings and homes). Climate change impacts are driving advances in pursuit of resilient infrastructure and consideration of nature-based solutions. These impacts range from extreme weather and rapid to slow-onset natural hazards (e.g. floods, storms, wildfire, sea-level rise, permafrost thaw). Infrastructure Canada is working with other federal departments and provinces, territories and communities to increase the quality of cost-shared investments and ensure they are climate resilient. This means integrating future climate considerations in decisions on location, build and design, and planned operation and maintenance.

Through purposeful development of knowledge products (e.g. guidelines, standards, and codes), capacity building, professional development and training, partnerships and collaboration, program requirements and funding, progress is being made in the pursuit of climate resilient public infrastructure.    

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the policy challenges and opportunities facing federal infrastructure programs in regard to supporting climate resilience.
  • Comprehend a range of municipal natural infrastructure options and related co-benefits.
  • Identify the key aspects of climate resilience infrastructure assessments and how Infrastructure Canada works with other orders of government.
  • Appreciate the need for cross-professional dialogue regarding climate resilience.
