The RAIC is pleased to announce a recent collaboration with Fenestration Canada for a new, free continuing education activity. Fenestration Canada has prepared a document to inform RAIC members about the need to verify whether imported products have been qualified for Canadian code compliance before committing to use them.
Canadian Code Compliance Advisory for Imported Windows, Doors and Skylights
Length: 0.5 hour
What's included: document, quiz, certificate of completion
The regulatory regimes for window, door, and skylight products manufactured outside North America are not compatible with Canadian building code requirements. There is no recognized way to qualify imported products to Canadian requirements without testing them to the standards and test methods identified in Canadian building codes and regulations. While windows, doors, and skylights are being highlighted, there are a great many more categories of imported product that should be of equal concern to design professionals.
Fenestration Canada has prepared a document to inform RAIC members about the need to verify whether imported products have been qualified for Canadian code compliance before committing to use them. This document identifies the performance and testing requirements that apply to the window, door, and skylight products intended for installation in Canadian buildings.
This is an independent, self-directed learning activity. Participants will read the document and complete a quiz to earn a continuing education certificate.
Continuing Education hours: 0.5 / 30 minutes
Learning Outcomes
By the successful completion of this practice resource participants will be able to:
-
Recognize that imported fenestration products offered for sale in Canada or proposed in project tender documents cannot be assumed to have been qualified to the performance and quality attributes defined in Canadian building codes.
-
Recognize that Canadian performance requirements can be more stringent than those in European Union (EU) countries, Britain, or in the United States (US).
-
Identify the standards in the NBC used to evaluate the quality and performance of fenestration products and their components.
-
Be able to explain that because of significant differences in testing scope, methodology, and the nature of compliance documentation between Canadian and overseas regulatory regimes it is not possible to rely on foreign certifications and attestations of product performance in place of confirmatory testing to the North American standards in the NBC.
