This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!

Architects have a responsibility to design spaces that are inclusive and accessible to all. This includes the 2SLGBTQ+ community and the continued need for support spaces. Through the lens of the Rainbow Resource Centre, Canada’s longest running 2SLGBTQ+ resource centre, the presentation will describe how to design with and for the Queer community. Based in Winnipeg, Rainbow Resource Centre’s Place of Pride is the first of its kind housing & campus project in support of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. This presentation will discuss what queer space is and how to properly engage with and design inclusive spaces for all.

Inclusivity is not limited to the 2SLGBTQ+ community as it is part of the larger conversation around diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is about building inclusivity into the larger urban fabric, while also educating people around all aspects of inclusivity as we work towards designing spaces for all.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the academic term "Queer Space" and what it means to current day spaces as they relate to health, safety, and accessibility.

  • Discuss ways in which design professionals can engage with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and rebuild relationships in projects.

  • State methods in planning and designing fully diverse, equal, and inclusive spaces for all.

  • Apply Trauma Informed Design into designing inclusive and safer spaces.
