This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!

The intersection between disability and good design requires more than awareness and advocacy. Only with the full participation of persons with disabilities in the design and development process will real inclusion be achieved. This means that working directly and together with the end users, including persons with disabilities, we will create understanding and positive solutions. This session will focus on design issues related to persons with low vison and who are blind and will include two speakers. Diane Bergeron is blind and is President of the CNIB Guide Dogs program in Ottawa, and she will tell her personal story on moving about in the built environment, and what Architects, Interior Designers and Landscape Architects should be paying attention to. Ron Wickman is an Architect, working out of Edmonton, who specializes in Accessible Architecture, and he will identify his design methodology of working directly with persons with disabilities, highlighting his experience working with Diane in Edmonton on the Premier's Council Office Space.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize the different variations of low vision or being blind (no light, no shadow).

  • Describe wayfinding strategies designed to benefit persons with low vision and who are blind.

  • Implement a better working methodology in design work that includes the full participation of persons with disabilities.

  • Discuss the process of creating building codes and accessibility standards that include the participation of persons with disabilities.
