This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!
In June 2020, the Auditor General of Quebec published a critical report on heritage management by the Ministry of Culture. The report reveals six major shortcomings, including a lack of knowledge about the architectural and material characteristics of built heritage. Unlike other countries such as Great Britain or the United States, Quebec and Canada do not systematically produce architectural surveys or drawings to document the composition, construction and program of sites and rooms, or to identify risks that threaten the preservation of sites. These documents make it possible to structure the assessment of classification beyond intangible values, to guide owners in their choice of maintenance, adaptations or transformations, and to orient the exemplary actions of the State as project owner. The presentation will address the methodological challenges involved in creating comprehensive documentation. It will emphasize the importance of three parallel approaches: architectural knowledge, the enhancement of intangible qualities and the intervention project with its specific technical requirements.
Appreciate the importance of methods and tools for generating architectural knowledge about existing buildings.
Distinguish architectural knowledge from built heritage, in its singularity and transversally as a technical, cultural and social production.
Identify the important architectural features of a heritage property beyond its historicity or social significance.
Define the intervention project and its specific technical requirements according to its particular interpretation.
