The world is rapidly changing. The climate crisis is forcing us to rewrite our relationship with the natural environment. Remote work, digital commerce and sim-environments are re-configuring our cities and the nature of urban life. Robotic fabrication and material sciences are transforming the processes of fabrication and construction. Advanced computation and machine learning are restructuring what it means to be an expert.

But the way architects, planners, and landscape architects practice has not changed. We continue to work in much the same as we did fifty years ago – as consultants competing on a lowest-possible-cost basis to produce final projects that all too often do not address the broader social and environmental challenges we care about.

Architectural Entrepreneurship is a new way of thinking about practice. It is about applying our creative skills to design new forms of working that empower professionals to leverage their expertise to the best of their abilities and make a positive impact in the world.

This presentation explores the potential of architectural entrepreneurship through case study examples from the University of Calgary’s Doctor of Design program.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the principles of design thinking can be applied to the business of architecture.

  • Explain how architects can leverage existing areas of expertise and expand their scope of practice to deliver new forms of value to their clients.

  • Discuss innovative practice models and how they enable architects to more fully pursue their broader architectural passions while improving their bottom line.

  • Identify the ways architects can leverage new models of practice to increase their impact and relevance.

Subject Matter Expert:

Dr. John Brown
PhD, Licensed Architect
Dean, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, University of Calgary

John Brown is a registered architect in Alberta and Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary. He is a founding partner of the residential design/build company Housebrand, and more recently, co-founder of the start-up Garden Loft (www.gardenloft.ca). Brown is a recognized authority on innovative models of architectural practice and age-in-community design. He received the RAIC Award of Excellence for Innovation and the Residential Architect Leadership Award for his development of Housebrand. He completed a PhD in age-in-community design from RMIT in 2016 that led to the Age-in-Place Laneway House Research Project which received a Mayor’s Urban Design Award in Housing Innovation. Brown commercialized this research to launch Garden Loft, a start-up delivering prefabricated supportive housing units and community-centred digital technology solutions to seniors and others with differing abilities. Brown currently leads UCalgary’s Doctor of Design program in which established design practitioners develop innovative practice models to better leverage their expertise and increase their impact. (The session will also include one-two Doctor of Design students/alumni who will present a summary of the innovative practice models they are developing).
