This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!
As we work towards achieving our 2030 and 2050 Net Zero Carbon targets, a coordinated approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential. The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry—and architects in particular—must actively lead in this endeavor. Currently, buildings account for nearly 30% of global energy consumption, with approximately 84% of that energy derived from fossil fuels. Among building energy uses, space heating represents around 50%, while ventilation and air conditioning contribute 8% and 2-3%, respectively.
To meet Canada's commitment to a net-zero electricity grid by 2035 and a net-zero economy by 2050, we must reimagine our buildings for the future. Can we 'electrify' our buildings to connect seamlessly with this upcoming net-zero electricity system?
Discuss the role that buildings can play towards de-carbonization.
Describe Canada’s 2035 Net-Zero Grid.
Explain the benefits and drawbacks of an all-electric building.
Identify what is involved with planning for and designing an all-electric building.
