1. Purpose

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the National Trust for Canada wish to promote public awareness of significant modern Canadian architecture from the 20th century. The Prix du XXe Siècle celebrates design quality and enduring excellence, recognizing the design of the original architect(s) and/or firm(s) and the on-going stewardship of the building’s owner(s). 

2. Eligibility

Any existing building built within the 20th century.

3. Expert Panel

An expert panel will be established, and maintained, by the RAIC and National Trust for Canada comprising a minimum of three (3) people expert in the area of modern Canadian architectural history and heritage.

A call for volunteers will be sent out by the RAIC and National Trust. The RAIC and National Trust will select the expert panel from this call. Diversity and regional representation will be encouraged in the selection of the panel. Members will be appointed for three-year terms (renewable). Terms will be staggered to ensure continuity.

4. Working List

The expert panel will develop and maintain a list of buildings suitable for being considered for the annual Prix du XXe Siècle awards. Buildings can be nominated by members of the profession and the public, for consideration by the expert panel.

5. Open Nomination Requirements

  • Name of nominated building
  • Address/ location of building in Canada
  • Architect(s) of Record
  • Year of construction
  • Client / owner of building  – Name, telephone, email address
  • Up to 20 images (including key plans, sections, elevations, details and photographs) that record the exterior and interiors of the building
  • A completed image index, providing captions and full credit information for each image
  • A short text describing the importance of the building (500 words max.)
  • Bibliographic information
  • Links to archival sources

 

Note: Submissions will be completed using the online submission platform. Submissions must be received before 10:00 p.m. ET, Monday, January 13, 2025. Entrants are solely responsible for timely submissions. This date and time are firm without exceptions.

Entries can be submitted either in English or in French.

All entries will be retained by the RAIC for publication, exhibition and archival purposes. 

Once you have started the online submission process, you may 'save' and come back at a later date to complete your submission (prior to the submission deadline).

6. Selection Process

Each year the panel will select up to three (3) projects to be awarded the Prix du XXe Siècle. Projects that are selected will be documented with up to 20 images (including key plans, sections, elevations, details and photographs) that record the exterior and interiors of the building. The documentation will provide a short text describing the importance of the building, bibliographic information and links to archival sources. This material will be used to provide documentary material to the general public.

7. Selection Criteria

The following selection criteria will be considered for the Prix du XXe Siècle:

  • the building(s) has international, national, and/or regional significance;
  • the building(s) remains an enduring work of architecture and an asset in the built environment;
  • the qualities of the building(s) may reflect: conceptual originality; technical advancement; innovation of its time; and/or symbolic significance;
  • the building(s) has been preserved over time through sensitive stewardship of its original qualities.

8. Number of Awards

A maximum of three awards will be conferred. At its discretion, the panel may elect not to confer an award.

9. Frequency

The award is to be offered every year.

10. Public Presentation

The Prix du XXe siècle will be presented at a public event. The presentation will be made in collaboration with the RAIC and the National Trust for Canada.

11. Commemorative Plaque

The RAIC and the National Trust for Canada will provide a commemorative plaque to be fixed in a prominent location on the exterior of the building.
