Redesigning Urban Infrastructure for Resilient, Sustainable and Healthy Urbanism

This session focuses on the design and redesign of public infrastructure for the resilient, sustainable, healthy development of cities and neighbourhoods. This includes the role architects and urban designers can play to transform developments, neighbourhoods, and cities –in the quest for Climate Change adaptation and mitigation. Key areas of work will be described using Canadian examples from coast to coast including: - Transit infrastructure and transit-oriented development - Active transportation, complete streets and walkable public spaces - Green-blue infrastructure: environmental sensitive areas, valleys and waterfronts,The session will also focus on urban and eco-design, multi-disciplinary integration, engagement, and the use of a variety of tools ranging from master plans, guidelines, feasibility studies, environmental assessments, participatory, collaborative sessions, the use of measurements and indicators, etc.  The presenters will showcase the current challenges, opportunities, trends to retrofit the infrastructure of the past based on key projects, in particular from the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa – the main laboratories of the process. 

They will also focus on new approaches and tools, in particular, the integration of architecture, landscape, urban design with engineering, environmental and ecological planning, transportation planning and design always prioritizing design excellence, to strong character and identity, for placemaking. This session builds on the 15 years of experience of the Council for Canadian Urbanism to bring together the country’s foremost urban designers, to showcase exemplary projects from Coast to Coast to Coast, to advocate for design for sustainable, liveable, authentic, design-based urbanism. The presenters are leaders of the Council for Canadian Urbanism, architects and urban designers with extensive experience and a broad portfolio of work on these areas.

Learning Objectives:

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Summarize the key contemporary issues of infrastructure retrofit, as well as new approaches and tools to develop resilient, sustainable, healthy public infrastructure.
• Identify key infrastructure projects across the country including transit, green-blue infrastructure, parks and open space, public amenities.
• Describe contemporary urban design approaches and tools, and their use in sustainable infrastructure design.
• Recognize the challenges and business opportunities arising for architects from the huge infrastructure investment in the post-pandemic world.

Subject Matter Experts:

Alex is an architect, urban designer and urbanist with extensive experience on a wide variety of issues and projects including downtown revitalization, urbanization of suburban areas, sustainable, transit-oriented development, design review, heritage integration and project management. Throughout his career Alex has lead important master planning, urban design and buildings projects in Canada and abroad. Alex is currently Sr. Advisor, Design, for the City of Brampton, and provides urban and architectural design advice to urban design panels for municipalities and institutions in Ontario. He is a frequent lecturer at Canadian universities, presenter at numerous professional conferences and was member of national and international juries (including CNUs Charter Awards). He is a strong advocate for sustainable and healthy urbanism, design excellence, founder/ director of the Council for Canadian Urbanism, Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, licenced architect and registered professional planner in Ontario.

Eric is an Urban Designer, a Planner and an Architect.He is a Partner at Urban Strategies Inc. and has over 25 years of experience in Canada, the United States and Europe.Eric has extensive redevelopment experience in sensitive urban areas in Canada – notably in the GTA, Ottawa, the United States and Europe. As a partner, he has led numerous award-winning downtown revitalization plans, community design plans, transit oriented developments   and large scale master plans. He has recently completed the award-winning University of Ottawa Master Plan and is currently working on a new mixed-use development of the north portion of the Dufferin Mall property in Toronto. Eric is an Urban Design industry leader and the President of the Council for Canadian Urbanism (CanU). He is a member of the Waterfront Toronto Design Review Panel and the chair of the Brampton Design Review Panel Pilot Project.
