VELUX PRESENTS Primer on Daylighting and the Value of Skylights

Industry Insiders Series

Topics: Design / Construction

Length: 1 hour | What's included: video, quiz, certificate of completion

This is the recording of a live virtual event

This 2-part series aims to provide a primer on the importance of fresh air and daylight in buildings while highlighting some considerations of how to design for a better experience for occupants with a special emphasis on daylight and fresh air from skylights. The name VELUX comes from ventilation and lux, the Latin word for light.

Part 1 – Daylight is dynamic and changes in terms of direction, location, colour and brightness over a day, over a season, or over a year. Unaffected is the desire to bring daylight into our buildings and the overall benefit of occupants’ comfort and health. In part 1 of this series, current standards and approaches will be explored as there are several approaches that can give slightly different results. This webinar will provide an inside look on designing architecture with daylight with the objective of increasing the sensitivity and consideration of daylight for the design community that may view it.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the influence that atmosphere, air moisture levels and location have on the brightness of the sky and how this could influence your daylighting strategies for the buildings you design.
  • Appreciate the balance between optimizing daylight and energy and what the trade offs are for the pure pursuit of one over the other.
  • Re-think daylight in terms of the possible design uses, the health benefits to occupants and especially to consider the artistic opportunity to bring in direct daylight from the sun through the roof.
  • Clearly understand general skylight style and material options to better inform your use and selection of skylights on your future projects.

Subject Matter Expert:

Russell Ibbotson, P.Eng, LEED AP, CTR

Technical Manager, VELUX Canada

Russell’s 20 years of experience in sustainability and healthy buildings is a nicely balanced cocktail of engineering analysis, lived experience and passion, with a hint of business acumen. After spending almost 10 years in renewable energy, Russell joined VELUX to help lead the Canadian development of better living environments with daylight and fresh air through the roof.

Russell is known for digging into the standards and the numbers but also for his keen interest in how people experience spaces. He puts great importance on correlating quantitative building performance with the qualitative experience of the occupants. Russell has participated in and supported many building projects following different building standards over the years, but Active House stands out as his favourite. Russell was the first Active House verifier in North America, he lived in Great Gulf’s Centennial Park Active House with his family in 2016 and co-chaired the 2019 Active House Symposium in Toronto.

Russell has spoken in North America and Europe about these experiences.

Russell has also made volunteering with building industry associations part of his job description. He is currently the Past-Chair of the CSC Toronto Chapter (Construction Specifications Canada) and has previously served on the board of directors for the CHBA (Canadian Home Builders’ Association) and IIBEC Southern Ontario Chapter (International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants).
