Hamilton
ON
Award Category:
Community Initiatives

The MBTW Group

The implementation of Veteran’s Place (Phase One of the Gore Pedestrianization Initiative) exemplifies the blending of excellence in project visioning, planning and urban design, landscape architecture, place-making and downtown revitalization. Veterans’ Place was a product of a well coordinated, dedicated and passionate team that included design consultants, municipal staff, local politicians and business owners and public stakeholders. The successful implementation of Phase One has been pivotal in recapturing community enthusiasm and generating excitement and support for the upcoming Phases Two and Three of the Pedestrianization Initiative.

Jury Comment(s):

"This project was devised to celebrate the essence of a place that had gone into decline. Specific interventions are at a fine pedestrian grain and have an undercurrent of commemoration. It is effective without being sentimental. Members of the jury were impressed with the degree to which this previously moribund series of spaces were effectively rediscovered and animated with high-quality pedestrian spaces."
