Awards of Excellence — 2019 Recipient

Alex Bozikovic
Award Category:
President’s Award for Media in Architecture

Alex Bozikovic
The Globe and Mail
Toronto, ON

Alex Bozikovic is the architecture critic for The Globe and Mail. In his columns, he mixes reporting and critical analysis to reveal what is happening in the built environment, and to advocate for better buildings and better cities.

His work in 2017 and 2018 spans six provinces and a range of architectural projects, from houses to public buildings to urban design. As a writer, he pays attention to the forces that shape architecture including esthetic and technical dimensions, and political and social contexts.

Throughout, the articles reveal how architecture impacts lives.

In a column on the National Arts Centre’s renovation and expansion, Bozikovic took a respectful but critical look on the new work by Diamond Schmitt Architects.

A column on Montreal’s new CHUM explored specific design issues in hospitals -- and the challenges of the P3 procurement system.

In writing about the advent of tall wood, Bozikovic explained the promise of tall wood and some of the issues regarding sustainability and constructability.

A 2018 profile of Brian MacKay-Lyons introduced the architect’s work to a cross-Canada audience.

Bozikovic also published a speculative project for intensifying a century-old residential neighbourhood in Toronto that was developed by Batay-Csorba Architects at his invitation.

Jury Comment(s):

“Alex Bozikovic writing about architecture is valuable and his reflections on what works and what does not are thoughtful observations.

“He explains Canadian architecture at various scales critically evaluates significant landmarks, explores complex urban design issues, discusses contentious planning approaches, and explains new technologies and how we build today.”

“Bozikovic informs citizens about their changing environments and reflects in particular on ‘how can design build on, and enhance, the power of a place?’
