The historic centre of Montreal is Champ des Mars, framed by city hall and law courts, a place of radical transformation, driven by a series of projects that are committed to a new and dynamic identity, through intent, through ideology and through architectural expression. this proposal looks at three specific projects that now frame this view, all created with the design leadership of Andrew King. King will present an image rich parcour through the making of these projects, their historical context and how they frame a dynamic and cosmopolitan future.

The Centre Hospital University Montreal super-hospital, complete three years ago, has become one of the cities architectural icons. it is the engine of this neighbourhood, a dynamic fulcrum that animates Rue. St. Denis.

Three blocks west Humaniti is a mixed use development that transformed the housing and development context of montreal. a radically resilient community, with a POP linked to place Riopelle and a dynamic formal and program strategy.

Emerging just below Champ des Mars is Place des Montrealaise, redefining the cities public realm, with it trans-disciplinary process and it commitment to the new stories of Montreal.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Analyze how long-term, visionary urban design aligns policy, design intent, and collaboration across sectors to shape meaningful public experiences.

  • Evaluate a system of design excellence projects that reframe health through public space, art, and resilience—exemplified by CHUM, Humaniti, and PDM.

  • Examine how placemaking, design vision, and political strategy intersect in complex urban projects requiring multi-level governance and consultation.

  • Explore user experience across interconnected urban spaces through a guided walking route near the conference site.
