This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!

Safeguarding the Grand Théâtre de Québec and its work of art required an extraordinary solution to ensure its longevity. The implementation of the project with its innovative glass envelope is a delicate response to a complex problem. Transparent, minimalist and almost immaterial, it acts as an extension of the original building, using an identical, finely-tuned structural logic and composition. In fact, the brutalist lines and artistic narrative are even more striking, thanks to the delicate solution implemented by the team. Amplified according to the building's morphology, it leaves the concrete masterpiece intact and perfectly visible. The lecture will focus on the architectural, technical, historical and implementation issues involved in this extraordinary project, and on the conditions put in place to ensure its success, but above all to preserve the work of Victor Pruss.

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize the problems the architects encountered.

  • Identify challenges involved in transforming the Grand Théatre.

  • Describe critical items and their solutions present in the final implementation.

  • Discuss how the architect's work and the work of art depend on each other.
