This webinar is part of the RAIC 2025 Conference on Architecture!
In British Columbia, primary and secondary schools produce 25% of the public sector's greenhouse gas emissions, more than post-secondary institutions and government buildings (CleanBC, 2022). With school districts and the provincial government committed to achieving net-zero carbon pollution by 2050, urgent and effective investment in the province's more than 1,954 school buildings is required. This presentation will examine building performance data in four school districts, with the objectives of (1) describing the actual energy performance and carbon emissions of the region's elementary schools, (2) identifying design and management strategies that are associated with energy performance, and (3) examining user comfort and behaviors in relation to energy performance.
Discuss the educational, environmental, and financial impact of energy performance in school districts.
Identify evidence-based design and retrofit strategies to improve energy efficiency in institutional buildings.
Describe the relationship between energy performance, building operations, and user comfort.
Implement hands-on strategies to involve building users, including staff and students, in building performance and user comfort.
