Toronto,
ON
Award Category:
Urban Design Plans

Lead Firm: PUBLIC WORK and City of Toronto (Co-Lead)

Completion: May 2018

Client: City of Toronto

The plan establishes a vision and framework for an expanded, improved, and connected parks and public realm network within downtown Toronto to support a doubling of its population over the next 25 years. It is based on five transformative Ideas called Core Circle, Great Streets, Shoreline Stitch, Park Districts and Local Places. Initiatives include restoring and enhancing the Davenport Bluff and Trail, turning the traffic median on University Avenue into a linear park, and reconnecting downtown to the waterfront.

Jury Comment(s):

“This study is a skilled and thorough consideration of the city’s potential at multiple scales, from local to regional. It is a highly useful template for citizen, designer, and politician to understand the ways in which Toronto could achieve a public realm that is more accessible, cohesive, and of greater substance, especially with regards to access to green space and an understanding of the city’s natural history.
