Mount-Royal Heritage Site, Montreal,
QC
Award Category:
Urban Fragments

Lead Firm: civiliti + julie margot design

Completion: Spring 2018

The City of Montreal commissioned Discovery Halts to commemorate Montreal’s 375th anniversary in 2017. The aim is to provide visitors to Mount Royal with a new experience of the mountain and a clearer understanding of its natural and historical features. The project consists of a family of objects: 12 topographical maps, 25 place-markers (clusters of cone-like structures), and ten landscaped halts, either curvilinear or angular, featuring built-in seating. Made of granite and bronze, they are installed in various locations. Numerous professionals, artists, artisans, and writers contributed.

Jury Comment(s):

“The best decision was to get off the beaten path and bring awareness through permanent discovery fragments. The project demonstrates a high degree of appreciation for the rich architectural and landscape history of Mount Royal Heritage Site.  Each element was exquisitely handcrafted with noble, durable materials of stone and metals.  Each was carefully sited to elegantly capture the sense of place, leaving space for new human stories.”
