The Region of Waterloo is expected to grow by 185,000 people and 80,000 new jobs in the next two decades. Historically, new growth within the region has spread to suburban areas. In an effort to limit sprawl and encourage growth in built-up areas, the regional municipality is investing in a rapid transit line to link the urban communities in Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo. The transit corridor will become the focus for new medium and high-density residential, retail and commercial areas The Community Building Strategy represents a starting point for standards that will guide the development of new buildings, streets and open spaces.
“The CTC Plan is a new type of urban design plan. Starting at the regional scale, it very quickly makes the necessary smaller scale design and programming connection to community development and place making. It brings forth a qualitative framework to ensure a successful transportation/mobility strategy and adjacent enjoyable and livable communities as part of a comprehensive urban corridor development strategy."
