The Victoria Park project encompassed the rehabilitation and upgrading of a major transit hub used by more than 27,000 people per day.
The original design of the station was centred on the automobile. The above-ground rail line divided the community in half and was a barrier for pedestrians. New entrances were needed to be built and existing paths widened and enhanced.
The designers employed Crime Prevention Thru Environmental Design (CPTED) concepts to ensure customers are comfortable moving through the station. Urban design elements, including the buildings, circulation, landscaping, green roof gardens and art were woven together into a consistent whole.
“An iconic piece of urban infrastructure that not only fulfills its transportation function but also demonstrates how such projects can be civic and social infrastructure that provide spaces of commodity and delight in architecture and the landscape. The Victoria Station provides a model for similar transit infrastructure renewal and enlightened design across Canada."
