Green Building (Administered in partnership with the Canada Green Building Council)

 This award is to recognize outstanding achievements of high-performance architecture in Canada for buildings that are environmentally responsible and healthy places to live, work and play. The award recognizes building designs and construction practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and on occupants, or provide for regeneration, in five broad areas:

  • Sustainable site planning
  • Safeguarding water and water efficiency
  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy
  • Conservation of materials and resources
  • Indoor environmental quality

This award is open to built works - either new construction or renovations - completed after January 1, 2007.

The Operations Centre built for Parks Canada demonstrates how the natural resources found on a site can be fully integrated within a building to minimize its environmental footprint, and create a building that is highly evocative of the place in which it is built. Located on the waterfront in Sidney, BC, this three-storey building serves as the headquarters for The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, established in 2003, and includes facilities for marina operations, administrative staff, and an interpretive centre.

Frits de Vries designed the Kerchum Residence focusing on integrating efficient environmental consciousness with a modern architectural aesthetic. The home has received LEED® Platinum for Homes Certification with its energy consumption, finishes, and landscape design all working together to push the boundaries of sustainability. Yet the architectural focus has not been compromised: it explores the potential for a diversity of spatial experiences in a home, as well as accommodating a multitude of expectations and functions.

With its richly patterned cladding of spandrel and clear glass and carefully scaled massing, the Durham Consolidated Courthouse makes a significant contribution to the emerging urban framework of downtown Oshawa. Its bold, modern vocabulary emphasizes transparency and openness both for users and passers-by. A large outdoor public space, Courthouse Square, is the forecourt to the building entrance and creates opportunities for civic engagement.
