The third and final webinar offering as part of RAIC’s collaborative webinar series with the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers (CCCL) is titled Design Professional Contracting Risks. The webinar will explore topics such as the architect’s role in administering contracts, scope of services, payment, responsibility for changes, errors, and delays, dispute resolution, and limiting liability. It will be led by three industry experts, Chris Armstrong, Glenn Ackerley, Jason Roth, and moderated by Andrea Lee.
This webinar has been approved for AIBC 1.5 CORE LU.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the basics of the RAIC contract
- Distinguish commonly proposed supplementary clauses
- Recognize the different approaches to avoid traps and manage risks
- Identify key contractual terms and onerous conditions which are commonly included in design services agreements

Chris Armstrong - B.A.Sc., University of British Columbia (Geotechnical), P. Eng. (Civil) (1989), LL.B., University of Calgary (1997)
Chris Armstrong worked in the consulting and construction industry for five years, first as a consulting geotechnical engineer and then as a project engineer. He joined Brian McClean in partnership, creating McLean & Armstrong LLP. Since then, the firm has grown into one of the premier construction law firms in British Columbia and has undertaken the resolution of large, complex disputes across Canada.

Glenn Ackerley - B.A., University of Toronto (1984), LL.B., University of Toronto (1987)
Glenn Ackerley is a partner with the law firm of WeirFoulds LLP in Toronto and is chair of the construction law practice group. Glenn fills the role of a "project lawyer", providing ongoing advice from the start through to completion of a construction project for public and private owners, developers, contractors, subtrades, suppliers, and design consultants. He regularly advises on project structures, construction and consultant contracts, procurement issues, and risk-avoidance strategies.

Jason D. Roth is a partner at Bennett Jones and head of the firm’s construction law practice group and capital projects industry team. He represents owners/developers and contractors in relation to domestic and international infrastructure, LNG, power and renewables, electrical transmission, pipeline, natural gas processing, agriculture, mining, and other projects.

Andrea Lee is a partner with Glaholt Bowles LLP and is certified as a Specialist in Construction Law by the Law Society of Ontario. She has practiced exclusively in construction law since her call to the bar in 2006. Andrea regularly advises parties in the industry with respect to construction contracts and professional design agreements.
