Unique Canadian architectural prize continues international vocation

OTTAWA, February 19, 2019 — The name of the Moriyama RAIC International Prize, with the direction and support of distinguished Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama, is changing to the RAIC International Prize.

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is inviting submissions for the 2019 edition of the RAIC International Prize. The mandate and criteria for this open, juried competition remain the same. The CAD $100,000 prize is open to architects from anywhere in the world and is awarded every two years for great transformative architecture that aids society and community by demonstrating the humanistic values of equality, respect and inclusiveness.

“Now that the uniqueness and importance of the International Prize is widely recognized, and that the name of the RAIC has gained weight in the international world of architecture, Sachi and I happily return the torch back to the RAIC to manage the International Prize,” says Mr. Moriyama, CC FRAIC RCA. “We welcome the renaming of the Moriyama RAIC International Prize to the RAIC International Prize.”

“The RAIC and the RAIC Foundation will honour Mr. Moriyama’s vision to share Canadian architectural values with an international audience and to celebrate architecture that is socially transformative,” says RAIC President Michael Cox, FRAIC. “We are deeply indebted to him for establishing the prize and for his altruistic vision of social relevance in architecture.”

The RAIC International Prize, awarded every two years, includes CAD $100,000 and a crystal sculpture designed by Wei Yew.  In addition, three $5000 scholarships are awarded to encourage students in architecture to aspire to a higher calling in architecture and planning.

“Sachi and I wish all the best to the RAIC and its members in this important undertaking in architecture and in the future of humanity worldwide,” adds Mr. Moriyama.  “We expect the RAIC International Prize and scholarships to continue to grow in stature, size and programme.”
