Vancouver Island South Network presents: Arthur Erickson, Canada's Revered Architect: A Centenary Celebration of a Vancouver Island and Global Legacy

Join us for an in-person event celebrating Arthur Erickson's 100th Birthday! The RAIC Vancouver Island South Network would like to invite you to an evening to celebrate the Life and Work of Arthur Erickson, Architect.

 

DATE: Wednesday, November 27, 2024 

TIME: 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. PT

DESCRIPTION: This celebratory public evening event will feature an illustrated presentation by architectural writer and critic Trevor Boddy: ‘Why Arthur Erickson Matters’ - followed then by a responding panel discussion, evaluating the half-dozen notable Erickson architectural and urban planning projects on Vancouver Island. Especially turning to considerations on what importance and influence this great practitioner can offer to architecture, and particularly to younger architects - as the twenty-first century advances. A photographic display of these Vancouver Island projects will accompany the evening’s proceedings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the contribution that Arthur Erickson's architectural designs have on the local Vancouver/Victoria community.
  2. Describe the work and legacy that Arthur Erickson left behind on both the urban design, urban planning, landscape design and interior design communities.
  3. Describe various international projects that Arthur Erickson designed.
  4. Describe various aspects of Arthur Erickson's material palette and structural expression that reflects the building typology, geographic location and site conditions.

TREVOR BODDY

 


Trevor Boddy, FRAIC, is a critic and curator of contemporary architecture and a Vancouver-based consultant to designers, developers and governments. His books, articles, exhibitions and consulting are dedicated to exploring the relationship between design and contemporary city-building. His writing on buildings and cities have been awarded the Alberta Book of the Year and Jack Webster Journalism prizes, Western Magazine Award, the RAIC Advocacy Award, and an Honorary Membership in the American Institute of Architects and the Bulgarian Union of Architects. At the 2011 UIA World Congress of Architecture in Tokyo, Boddy’s essay on contemporary design in Canada entitled “MEGA + MICRO: Canada, Innovation at the Extremes” was commended for the UIA/CICA’s Pierre Vago Prize for best architectural criticism published worldwide. His most recent books are: CITY-BUILDER: The Architecture of James K M Cheng (Images, Melbourne); Glacier Skywalk, and Stantec: Airports (both Figure 1 Press, Vancouver). In 2005 he was named Fellow of New York’s Institute for Urban Design. Currently teaching at Calgary, he has held academic positions at UBC, Oregon, Manitoba, Carleton and Toronto, and lectures globally on contemporary design.

During the event, we will be airing a pre-taped presentation from Nick Milkovich on his career working with Arthur Erickson in their joint studio.  

Nick Milkovich was born in Vancouver and began his architectural journey at UBC, where Arthur Erickson was one of his instructors. In 1968, Nick graduated from UBC and joined Erickson/Massey. In 1972, he joined Arthur Erickson Architects, becoming an Associate in 1979 and Director of Design in 1987. Nick spent many decades as a core member of Erickson’s design team, particularly on custom house commissions. His early contributions also include significant cultural and civic projects such as the award-winning Museum of Anthropology at UBC and the Law Courts in downtown Vancouver. In 1991, Nick founded Nick Milkovich Architects, where Erickson worked as a consultant until his passing in 2009. Nick Milkovich Architects has a diverse portfolio of urban design projects, public buildings, and residential developments in North America and Asia. The firm has received awards for the Waterfall Building, Creekside Community Centre, Museum of Glass, and RCMP Heritage Centre. Nick was elevated to RAIC fellowship in 1997 and received the AIBC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

GEOFFREY ERICKSON

Geoffrey is one of Arthur Erickson’s nephews and a partner in Studio Erickson. He is a director on the board of the Arthur Erickson Foundation and looks after the Erickson Family Collection archives. Since graduating from the Ontario College of Art & Design in 1984 Geoffrey has worked primarily in interior design. Prior to that he studied design at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, and the Vancouver School of Art. In 1982 he started working for Arthur Erickson Architects in Toronto on many design projects and has documented AEA projects around the world. Geoffrey also worked for many other design firms in Toronto and Vancouver, and on private design commissions. He helped pioneer early 3D modelling and design on computers which lead to the formation of EG Productions in 1992, producing videos with Emmy Award animator Cliff Garbutt. He has curated and edited three books on Arthur Erickson’s work and co-created the arthurerickson.com website.

STEVEN WANG

Author of a seminal Chinese book on Arthur Erickson's Architecture (in close consultation with Erickson); thesis on landscape design in BC modernist architecture; former project architect with Erickson successor Bing Thom; currently in practice on Vancouver Island.
