The RAIC Metro Vancouver Network invites to you join RAIC Fellows Lynn Webster and Rudy Friesen for a discussion on the intersections of wellness, COVID-19, and architecture. The talk will delve into specific areas of interest for each presenter, while sharing a common view that good design can improve both physical and mental health, especially in these times.
Architecture, Healthcare and Wellness
Lynn Webster will share her experience in designing healthcare facilities and focus on identifying several major areas for acute care design improvement for patients, family, staff, and the community. The discussion will explore how acute care environments can respond to changing and evolving requirements and design elements that may be under-considered in traditional acute care healthcare planning. Areas of discussion will include urban design/site planning, climate change, infection prevention/pandemic planning, and building design elements, as well as highlight aspects of these areas that are opportunities and/or challenges.
COVID-19 and Long-Term Care Facilities
COVID-19 has vividly illustrated that the way we design most Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities are endangering the well-being of older adults. It has shown us that we need systemic change – from the physical environment to the delivery of care. Recent research tells us that the household model is our best option. Rudy Friesen will present about the impact of the current pandemic on LTC facilities and how, as architects, we need to get on board now.
The presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion and Q&A.
