July 21, 1972 - December 26, 2024
Shannon passed away peacefully with family members by her side at the General Hospital, Ottawa, on the evening of December 26. Beloved daughter of Susan and Desmond, sister of Sean (Stephanie, niece Madison) from Belleville, niece of Wanita Root from Bayfield, Julie Clark (Jay Inglis) from Stratford, Russell Clark (Cathie MacKenzie) from London, Kathy Wood from Thorold, Joan Fitzgerald (John) from St. Catherines, Vivien Riddell (Jim, deceased) from Montreal and Kenneth Bassett from St. Michel des Saints. Also loved by numerous cousins.
Shannon was a Canadian-American architectural and urban designer (Carleton University School of Architecture, Masters of Architecture in Urban Design Harvard Graduate School of Design). As a tenured Professor of Architecture at McEwen School of Architecture, Laurentian University, Sudbury, she was inspired by both her students there and by the surrounding breathtaking landscape. It was there, as well, that Indigeneity became a vital part of her teaching and of her spirituality.
During her short time, she led an extraordinary life. Her accomplishments were many - national and international published writings, lectures, design work and research exhibitions. Of particular joy to her were co-founding BEA(N) Building Equity in Architecture in the North, and collaborating with colleagues in India, a country she had visited and felt a kinship to since early university days, on the conservation and urban redevelopment of the old walled city of Delhi. But the legacy she built was based on the loyalty she felt to her friends and on her deep sense of duty to ensure justice and equity which she would courageously never relinquish. And, underlying the "impressive scholarly contributions she made to her field and the positive impact she made in the university community" (Malcolm M. Campbell, PHD, Provost and Vice-President Academic, Laurentian University) was her incredible, unstoppable work ethic.
Last, but not least, and certainly must be mentioned was her great affection for little Suboo. Radiated back always was tender care and love.
This beautiful, kind soul was loved and will be missed forever by so many.
A donation to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada would be gratefully accepted.
