The RAIC is pleased to partner on a new innovative "Managing Construction" course series that will empower you to manage and mitigate project risks by focusing on the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of the CCDC contract clauses that are commitments to each other.  

Overview

The foundation of a successful project is understanding the commitments, expectations, responsibilities, “whys” and risks/rewards for all parties, in all the stages/components of a project. The goal of this course series is to help you and your team to ‘think differently' about how you manage your projects, break us out of industry silos, and raise the bar in construction for everyone. This innovative course series is taught by a group of multi-disciplinary industry experts and includes the perspectives and experience of owners, constructors, and consultants. Instead of learning from a solo instructor with a limited perspective, this course series challenges you to see and understand industry issues from all points of view.

 The six courses in this live, online series include:

1. CCDC Contracts: Supplementary and Non-Standard Clauses

Description:

When it comes to contracts, it’s not about your own thoughts and assumptions - it’s about what’s written!

Allocation of risk often gets changed in contract clauses based on project owners or their lawyers’ past experiences. The issue with changes to contract clauses is the lack of understanding of what the clause means and its associated risk. This means if the risk materializes and disputes arise, relationships are damaged, project costs can increase, schedules can be compromised, bidders can jeopardize their businesses and the potential for litigation increases.

This course will help you understand what the risks are in CCDC, CCA and provincial standard contracts that have been modified by non-standard clauses, why these clauses are modified and the costs associated with these clauses. 

BE AWARE: In the nuances of the prime contract clauses, there are implications to all partners including the consultants and subcontractors.

You will experience all this through the eyes of the project partners – the owner, consultant and contractor. Experts from each sector will share their insight, knowledge and explain the “why”, “what” and “how” to mitigate these clauses.

Whether you’re a project owner seeking proposals, a consultant creating, reviewing or participating in proposals or the contractors responding to them, everyone needs to do it well for the success of project.

A team of trainers will review each stage of the RFP process from the perspectives of a project owner, consultant and contractor and you’ll gain key insights about what to consider for successful progression. Packed with tips and suggestions on how to make sure each partner is successful in their proposal pursuit, you’ll walk away with actionable knowledge you can put to work on the job immediately.

Using a hands-on, practical approach, this course will also give you an opportunity to apply what you learn by guiding you through an interactive exercise of presenting your proposal to the ‘client.’ This activity will give you the opportunity to receive guidance and feedback from our training team that will help you to hone your skills in responding to proposals.

3. Managing CCDC Contracts for Project Success

Description:

One of the most common mistakes we make in the construction industry is not opening, reading and understanding the contract requirements until it's too late. Waiting until there is conflict and only then referring to the contract to see how, or if, we can get out of the problem is a dangerous game.

Whether you’re the project owner, consultant, or contractor, you need to understand what you have agreed to in the contract and why the clause exists in the first place. It’s critical to be aware of what you’re agreeing to: in the nuances of the prime contract clauses, there are implications and requirements impacting all partners including the consultants and subcontractors.

Gain insights into key clauses and concepts in different project delivery methods that consistently create challenges and conflict. You’ll learn from each instructor’s experience as an ICI practitioner and gain the perspectives of a project owner, consultant and contractor on:

  • What these clauses mean and why they exist
  • How to mitigate the pain points associated with these clauses
  • How to develop your ‘go forward’ strategies and practices

The construction management project delivery method is about building a collaborative team from the outset of the project. The team is comprised of the project owner, consultant and contractors to address the key areas of functional requirements, time, cost, quality, and constructability. When construction management is done well you avoid cost overruns, schedule delays, quality and performance issues, leading to success for everyone involved.

In this course, you will delve into detail on what Construction Management is, the roles and responsibilities of each partner throughout all project phases: predesign, design, project delivery and post construction. After taking this course, you will be well-versed in the construction management project drivers and concepts to fulfil your contractual responsibilities and grasp the nuances of the contract clauses in CCDC 5A | 5B.

Facilitated by the notorious Debbie Hicks this course puts you front-and-centre with a training team of three ICI practitioners offering perspectives of project owner, consultant and contractor. Description:

Whether you are a contractor, project owner or consultant, understanding project delivery options and choosing the best method for your project is fundamental to your success. Making sure all project stakeholders understand their roles and responsibilities for the chosen project delivery method is critical for building trust, honesty and respect.

Facilitated by Debbie Hicks and a multi-disciplinary training team, you will gain expert insight into key considerations for evaluating and selecting a project delivery method, including project-specific needs and priorities, allocation of risk, team members’ expertise, success measurements, budget and schedule.

You’ll review each project delivery method from the perspectives of a project owner, consultant, and contractor as well as the clauses in CCDC 2, 5A, 5B, 14, and 15 that are critical to each delivery method’s success. Delivery methods covered in this course include:

6. CCDC 14+15: Managing the Uniqueness of Design Build

Course Dates: January 29, 30 and 31, 2025

This course is 12 hours in length

Description:

From the project owner creating their Statement of Requirements, to the consultants understanding their unique roles, to the contractor developing and implementing practices to optimize design-build performance, all partners need to grasp the nuances of design-build. This session will discuss the unique contractual conditions on a design-build project and essential insights for improving your chances of success in this project delivery method.. We will focus on the crucial clauses in the CCDC 14 and 15 contracts and the fundamental elements of design-build for project success. These technical skills, as well as critical insights into the challenges and opportunities from each partner’s perspective, make this course the “sharp arrow you need in your quiver”.

These courses have been designed by an inter-disciplinary ICI team with the intention of fostering dialogue and understanding between stakeholders across the ICI sector. Courses are recommended for:
