As Vancouver’s industrial lands are being displaced by the pressures of the ever-expanding inner city, the mixed-use industrial and residential developments of Strathcona Village, completed in the summer of 2018, and Archetype, scheduled to be completed in 2022, serve as models of a new hybrid mixed-use typology. Both developments by GBL Architects maintain existing industrial spaces while increasing local housing supply, successfully integrating previously incompatible programs. This mix of uses contributes to the building of a robust, diverse, and sustainable urban economy for the City that is scalable to other urban centres across the country.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Compare the benefits of retaining light industry within the urban fabric;
- Identify the critical programmatic requirements required for the integration of light industrial use in residential use developments;
- Assess the value of incorporating new mixed-use models in other Canadian cities, while challenging the conventions of current mixed-use project thinking;
- Develop solutions to the complex programmatic requirement of light industrial and residential use developments.
