Lean Construction Institute of Canada (LCI-C) annual conference and training day
Training Day: Playing with Legos and Other Serious Fun
“The training day is perfect for getting the Lean basics,” said LCI-C co-chair Kathleen Lausman. “It is a hands-on day that demonstrates how Lean can be used at a workplace.”
This year’s training day, May 3 from 08:00 to 17:00, has four streams to choose from: ACG Lean Construction Education Program (Units 1 and 2), Advanced Lean Boot Camp, Choosing By Advantages and Value Stream Mapping/Target Value Design.
The AGC Lean Construction Education Program Units 1 and 2 focus on variation in production systems and pull production. The Units are an excellent introduction to Lean principles, and how Lean can be applied in the design and construction industry.
The Advanced Lean Boot Camp will provides a broader overview on how Lean can be applied through practical and hands-on learning. Looking broader than just introductory principles, the Advanced Lean Bootcamp is a great refresher course for those who have already undertaken Lean, or looking to enhance their knowledge and expertise.
In the third training day stream, attendees can learn about the Choosing by Advantages technique. Choosing by Advantages, or CBA, allows decision-makers to reach consensus, focus on outcomes, and understand all of the factors considered during the decision-making process.
The last training day stream is divided in two: the morning portion is about value stream mapping, while the afternoon is spent on target value delivery, a design process where stakeholders collaboratively produce a design that provides the best value.
Action-packed Conference
“Last year’s event was very well received. More than 95 per cent of the attendees indicated they would recommend our conference to their peers,” said LCI-C co-chair Serge Massicotte. “We think this year's conference continues to raise the bar and will benefit companies and individuals in various parts of their Lean journeys.” The May 4 and 5 conference program consists of 18 sessions and two keynote speeches. “The conference is a great opportunity to see what others are doing with Lean systems, find out how Owners got started with Lean projects, and how designers are getting better results,” continued Massicotte. The sessions are run concurrently in two rooms and you can mix and match which sessions you want to attend. Lean journeys, Lean bites, and more!
Inspiring Keynote Speakers
Thursday’s keynote speaker is Rex Miller, an award-winning author, respected futurist and an elite coach. He is the winner of both the CoreNet Global Innovators Award and Industry Excellence Award. Some of his books include Humanizing the Education Machine which explores the U.S. education system, the Commercial Real Estate Revolution which provides a roadmap for changing the adversarial culture that drives many construction projects, and Change Your Space, Change Your Culture which tackles chronic workplace disengagement.
Friday’s keynote speaker is Dick Bayer, the president of the ReAlignment Group Ltd. and an adjunct professor at the Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management at the University of Denver. He is currently living in Ottawa working as the IPD/Lean Design and Construction Advisor for the Centre Block Rehabilitation Project, a proposed 12-year project to improve and renovate the Centre Block of the Canadian Parliament building campus.

ABOUT LCI-C
The Lean Construction Institute of Canada (LCI-C) was established in 2015 to help transform the building industry in Canada by making a difference in how projects are planned, designed and managed, in all forms of project delivery.
Lean Construction embodies the principles of Lean, and can help deliver construction projects more efficiently, while increasing productivity in all aspects of a project. Its principles are already being utilized in other industries, and projects around the world are benefiting from the use of Lean Construction.
LCI-C is dedicated to sharing and promoting Lean Construction principles in all aspects of building, including new approaches to planning and control, the use of cross-functional teams, the utilization of modeling in project definition and design, and new tools for production workflow in construction. lcicanada.ca
