Public consultations are a regular part of design activities. With a rapidly aging population and new accessible consultation requirements from municipalities, clients, and the Accessible Canada Act, how to hold an accessible meeting and get productive feedback are new skills for most people. This presentation covers topics that will improve outcomes and successful outcomes including appropriate language, accessible invitations, accessible meeting location requirements, how to find representatives from the disabled community to participate, what accessible accommodations might be requested, along with how to make your presentations as accessible as possible. The presentation will conclude with a long list of resources to help participants and their teams be ready for all future meetings.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the basic accessibility features for a public meeting space
  • Access the accessible accommodation services that may be requested by participants
  • Connect with representatives from the disabled community and elicit effective feedback about the accessibility of the designs they are proposing
  • Apply additional resources and assistance to ensure successful meetings and meet the requirements of clients and the Accessible Canada Act
