Session 1. Introduction to the For-Profit Sectors - January 22, 2025 @ 2 pm EST

  • Understand which revenues are GST/HST applicable  
  • Learn about obligation to charge and collect tax

Session 2. GST/HST Place of Supply - February 19, 2025 @ 2 pm EST

  • Understand the key differences between GST and HST  
  • Learn how to apply the correct rate of tax  
  • Identify the differences between certain types of properties and services 
  • Recognize when you have been charged the wrong rate of tax   
  • Reduce common GST/HST mistakes

Session 3. Input Tax Credits - March 19, 2025 @ 2 pm EST 

  • Recognize the key GST/HST issues for Capital Properties 
  • Know when to account for GST/HST in different circumstances 
  • Understand and apply the correct rules for claiming ITCs over time  
  • Identify and reduce common GST/HST mistake

Session 4. Audits & Examinations + Books & Records - April 16, 2025 @ 2 pm EST 

  • Introduce the different GST/HST review processes 
  • Understand methods and procedures  
  • Review your role   
  • Introduce GST/HST record-keeping provisions    

Session 5. GST/HST Directors’ Liability and Taxpayer Rights - May 14, 2025 @ 2 pm EST

  • Learn about your responsibilities as Director 
  • Hear about personal liability potential 
  • Understand your options 
  • Review your rights  

Speaker Michael Monk has been an employee of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for 33 years.  During that time, he has worked extensively with GST/HST. Michael’s current role in CRA’s Ottawa Headquarters is with the GST/HST and Digital Compliance Directorate where he has managed CRA’s National GST/HST Presentations and Outreach services for the last 7 years. Michael was a Team Leader and Senior Technical Interpretations Analyst for 10+ years in GST/HST Rulings, Legislative Policy and Regulatory Affairs Branch.  He spent numerous additional years in other GST/HST roles within the Compliance Programs Branch.  Michael also worked as a CRA Facilitator throughout a ten-year period creating and instructing GST/HST Legislation and Audit courses to CRA staff. Michael has many years of experience, working with a multitude of GST/HST issues, across several sectors.  He has participated in conferences, preparing and delivering GST/HST presentations to a variety of accounting and industry associations. Michael has volunteered with many community and school association groups over the years.  He has served as Director on the Board of a large national charity, and also on CRA’s Employee Assistance Program Committee.
