Bridgepoint Health is the first hospital in Toronto to receive a LEED Silver rating, but its sustainability extends beyond LEED to create an architecture of wellness that celebrates a sustainable healthcare system. The design optimizes the therapeutic benefits of nature for healing by emphasizing visual and physical access to the outdoors. Magnificent views of the lush Don River Valley and Riverdale Park, the changing downtown skyline, and the vibrant Riverdale neighbourhood – are all emphasized to connect patients to the community.

BC Passive House Factory is an all-wood-construction demonstration project. The client, BC Passive House (BCPH), mandated that the design and construction of their new facility must exemplify their investment in wood construction, prefabrication, energy efficiency, and sustainable design practice. The new 1,500-square-metre facility is used for the manufacturing of prefabricated Passive House panels and was conceived as a simple, light-filled, wooden box.

Trois-Rivières
Province / Territoire:

The winner of an open anonymous architectural competition, the Amphithéâtre de Trois-Rivières is a new major cultural facility located at the fork of the St. Maurice and St. Lawrence rivers.

The architectural concept is symbolized by a thin, symmetrical 80-by-90-metre horizontal roof. The covered outdoor seating area features a perforated red metal soffit ceiling that suggests its theatrical function, showcased at night by the lighting from eight metal columns. Like a portico on a promontory, the amphitheatre has become a new riverfront landmark for the city of Trois-Rivières.

Récipiendaire:
Scandinave Les Bains Vieux-Montréal

Saucier + Perrotte architectes

Architecte(s) concepteur(s):

Gilles Saucier, FIRAC
André Perrotte, FIRAC

Ville:
Montréal
Province / Territoire:
QC

Located in the heart of historic Old Montreal, Scandinave Les Bains Vieux-Montréal is an urban spa whose purpose is to provide a thermal therapy experience that engages each of the body’s senses. The formal parti of the project is derived from the contact between hot and cold — the design distills the idea of cool glacial forms and the warmness of volcanic rocks. White angular masses of glacial topography coupled with volcanic geology bespeak the duality that is central to the thermal therapeutic experience proposed by the spa.

In September 2009, the final phase of the master plan culminated with the completion of Koerner Hall, a 1,135 seat performance venue.

Ravine Guest House

Shim-Sutcliffe Architects Inc.

Architecte(s) concepteur(s):

Brigitte Shim, FRAIC
Howard Sutcliffe, MRAIC

Ville:
Toronto
Province / Territoire:

The pavilion stands amidst a lush landscape abutting a Toronto ravine. This small glowing lantern, a quiet retreat and a pool house, blurs the distinction between inside and outside: a large fireplace is central to both interior and exterior living areas, wood flooring continues seamlessly from inside to outside terrace, and large glass and wood doors open fully to the outdoors. A minimal hanging steel structure suspends the continuous clerestory which enfolds both interior and exterior living spaces beneath it.

Honoring Quebec City's 400th anniversary and drawing on the unique history and genius loci of the site, the Promenade Samuel-De Champlain unites two icons of Quebec City's identity - the river and the cliff - creating a coherent, active landscape facade for the capital city.  The Promenade reclaims neglected industrial and infrastructural fringe, transforming it into a public, leisure oriented natural environment and reactivating the city's access to the St. Lawrence River and shoreline.

This residence and guesthouse is located near the ski hills of Mont-Tremblant north of Montréal. Overlooking a verdant mountain landscape and located on the edge of a traditional log house development, the house is uncompromising in its contemporary architectural expression, reflecting modernity and local building traditions. The house’s three main volumes, dedicated to the three lives of its occupants — eating, sleeping and living — slide on one another along an east-west axis.

Récipiendaire:
Prefab Cottage for Two Families

Kohn Shnier Architects

Architecte(s) concepteur(s):

Martin Kohn, MRAIC

Ville:
Toronto
Province / Territoire:
ON

This year round two-family cottage is comprised of seven modules which required just 25 days to construct in an off-site facility. When assembled, these prefabricated units form a long and narrow building. The length offers a variety of living spaces while the constricted width maintains a level of intimacy and affords views of the lake from every room. Sited along a ridge, each of the three levels has a point of access at grade. Facing the lake, the east elevation consists entirely of sliding glass doors and provides every room with access to the forest or balconies.
