The engagement process in architecture involves asking and responding to the much broader questions of “why” and “how”, challenging the popular misconception that architects just design and draw. The session focuses on the engagement process, methodology, tools and strategies for understanding and developing project goals and establishing needs assessment and functional program. Through the lens of three projects and distinct user groups – non-profit elderly facility, state-of-the art manufacturing facility and a hospital, the session will outline the early design process and the outcome of various engagement approaches. By stimulating interaction among participants, some tools will be demonstrated first hand.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the engagement process and establishing a project vision;
- Identify engagement activities appropriate for different types of users and needs;
- List specific goals for user and community engagement as it applies to the design process;
- Discuss ways in which the user and community engagement can shape new design trends and evidence-based design.
