The Grand Théâtre de Québec, a project designed by Victor Pruss in the late 1960s, suffered from major envelope problems. An iconic building of the city of Quebec, the project is a true witness of the brutalist movement. A new protective envelope was developed to preserve its structural integrity, its envelope and the important interior mural created by Jordi Bonet. This delicate case of glass and metal completes the work of Pruss in a final act, both technologically and sensitively. Today this new envelope is a component allowing a new vision of the theatre. At times transparent and at others reflective, the envelope plays with the notions of art and its relationship with the individual. A highly technical project requiring numerous mechanical, structural and envelope innovations, the new Grand Théâtre de Québec, adorned with its new envelope, is in dialogue with its modern context. Since its completion, the project has received numerous awards and distinctions including the Grand prix d’excellence de l’Ordre des architectes du Québec, prix du public de l’Ordre des architectes du Québec, the RAIC Award of Excellence for Innovation in Architecture.
