How do we know when a design is accessible?

SESSION:

As designers we have been aware of Universal Design principles and goals since Ronald Mace encouraged us to integrate them in our work. As users with disabilities we have continued to be frustrated because we still experience so many gaps in our environment meaning the spaces, buildings, streets and communities are not completely inclusive. This session will explore various approaches to measure if we got it right. The presentation will include recent research into methods including future steps.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

• Increase their ability to perceive whole contexts as landscapes of daily living.   
• Increase their interest in co-design practices as the precursor for subsequent evaluation of a designed space.
• Evaluate the types of information about how a designed space works.

Lara (LAA-raa) is a designer and researcher working to make indoor and outdoor spaces more functional, comfortable and enjoyable for people of all abilities. As a certified accessibility professional with a background in architecture and human ecology, Lara works with designers, developers and users to create places, products and programs that minimize barriers for everyday living. Through her doctoral research, Lara focuses on how to ensure the interactions between people with disabilities, especially invisible ones, and their environment is as successful as possible.
