The built environment is vital to meeting Canada’s carbon emission targets, and Net-Zero/Zero-Carbon buildings will be key to achieve that. Many stakeholders are keen to understand what certification schemes work best for their projects and how to achieve them. This webinar will introduce the concept of high-performance buildings and define the pathways for different certification schemes such as Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) Zero Carbon Buildings, International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Zero Energy, and Passive House. Common financial misinterpretations and technical challenges will be addressed based on Alberta’s context. Examples will be presented such as Calgary Zoo’s Panda Passage project and Alberta’s Net-zero Research Study.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to

  • Define net zero energy and net zero carbon scenarios
  • Explain high level strategies for designing net zero buildings
  • Analyze pathways for achieving net zero performance buildings
  • Explain the role of energy analyses in achieving net zero buildings.
