From Foundational Standards to Global Transformation: Exploring openBIM's Impact on the AEC Industry

This session will outline two foundational and internationally recognized BIM standards. The first standard covers established BIM processes and the other the standards of data exchange via openBIM. An understanding of that the standards are and how it will impact the future of architectural practice. A global review of how BIM has advanced as well as the recent benchmarking of the Canadian digital journey in the industry and the government’s digitization roadmap will be covered. We will also discuss resources being developed for the Canadian AECOOM industry to support the digital transformation, including an update to the BIM Contract Appendix, the nationalization of ISO 19650 and the interest from government on the need for Digital Twins.

Executive Director, BuildingSMART Canada
Claudia Cozzitorto is an accomplished architect and advocate for openBIM. Claudia's expertise in BIM has led her to become a leading voice in the Canadian architecture community. She is the Executive Director of buildingSMART Canada, an organization dedicated to promoting openBIM standards in Canada, and she is also the founder and former chair of the Toronto BIM Community, a former board member of the Institute for BIM in Canada and has been a BIM subject matter expert for the Canadian Handbook of Practice her work has helped to advance the use of BIM in Canada.
Claudia’s career has focused on implementing BIM technologies in firms, including Moriyama Teshima, MJMA, and Diamond Schmitt. She is now the Chief Operating Officer and Project Director at AECO Innovation Lab, where she is working to bring BIM to regulatory bodies through research and collaboration with government, industry, and academia.
