The United Nations conducted a “Millennium Ecosystem Assessment” in 2005. The objective was to assess the consequences of ecosystem change to human well-being. The goal was to find out the scientific basis for action needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of those ecosystems and their contribution to human well-being.

The Assessment identified that, out of the twenty-four global ecosystem services, fifteen are being degraded over time as a direct result of unsustainable resource and land uses. These problems, unless addressed, will substantially diminish the benefits that future generations obtain from their ecosystems. The degradation of ecosystem services could grow significantly worse during the first half of this century and is a barrier to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The UN identified that one way to reduce, or to possibly reverse, the negative environmental impact of the built environment could be to create new developments— or redesign existing buildings and urban areas— so that they provide or support ecosystem services. If the built environment can provide some of its own ecosystem services, pressure is potentially decreased on local and distant ecosystems.  If successful, the degraded ecosystem functions may be able to begin to regenerate and, therefore, be able to support more species.

The 2019 Throne Speech said: “… and use nature-based solutions to fight climate change …”.  The purposes of bio-regenerative building designs are to regenerate food, air, water, energy, wellbeing, education, and carbon in indoor environments to replenish ecosystem services, fight climate change, and facilitate human wellbeing.  Nature-based solutions come from natural designs that have been tested for 3.8 billion years and are sustainable and harmonized with the ecosystem.  Nature-inspired design solutions are resilient and utilize existing ecosystem relationships for symbiotic advantage.

Using nature-inspired design solutions as the cornerstone, bio-regenerative buildings provide net-positive outcomes, replenish natural resources, address the seven dimensions of wellness, facilitate inter-generational activities, and contribute to at least nine of the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals.  This multifaceted design approach integrates biophilic, biomimetic, and bio-synergistic strategies into the design elements. This seminar will focus on the wellbeing aspect of bio-regenerative building design, which has links to food, air, and education regeneration.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the differences between sustainable and regenerative building design.
  2. Explain bio-regenerative building design concepts.
  3. Deliver bio-regenerative building design methodologies in wellness.
  4. Apply bio-regenerative building design options and examples in wellness.
