Along with the many benefits of glass entrances come unique challenges. This course covers current trends in glass entrance design and key considerations for hardware in various types of applications. Attendees will receive an overview of specification criteria to ensure door openings are in compliance with fire, life safety, accessibility, and other building code requirements, all while meeting the project’s aesthetic objectives. The presentation will also address what makes different types of glass entrances both appealing and functional, and what challenges must be overcome when specifying them. This includes all-glass entrances, thermal doors, and balanced doors. 

Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

 

  • Identify critical considerations related to glass entrance systems including life safety, ADA requirements, ANSI/BHMA standards, thermal performance, and loads.
  • Differentiate between the various types of glass entrances including thermal doors, balanced doors, and all-glass doors and recognize their features and benefits, and what applications each is best suited for.
  • Implement practical knowledge of hardware options for glass doors including panic devices, ladder pulls, door pivots, door rails, and support fins.
  • Apply the key factors to effectively balance aesthetics and performance, as well as be better aware of the current trends influencing glass entrance design, such as evolving energy codes.

Mark Suehiro has more than 15 years of experience in the architectural entrance systems and hardware field. His extensive knowledge of glass doors systems encompasses product engineering, testing, manufacturing, distribution, and new product development. In his role as director of the entrances and partitions group at CRL, Mark oversees a team of technical specialists in assisting architects, building owners, and contractors with the design, specification, and installation of code-compliant glass entrance systems.
