Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Architectural Science in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of assistant professor effective July 1, 2026 subject to final budgetary approval. 

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching will have a primary focus on design studio and other courses aligned with SRC expertise.  The successful candidate will have expertise in at least one of the following areas:
 

  • Housing innovation 
  • Adaptive reuse
  • Building science
  • Construction technology
  • Sustainability, decarbonization and life cycle assessment
  • Emerging materials, innovation and fabrication


Required Qualifications:

  • An accredited architecture degree
  • Professional architectural experience
  • A record of established or emerging scholarly research and creative (SRC) activity

Preferred credentials/experience, include: 
  • Professional licensure
  • PhD, or an advanced degree in a related area
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in design studio
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in one of the areas noted above
  • Demonstrated experience with professional or community stakeholders in the AEC industry

The successful candidate will be required to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels (both studios and lecture/seminar courses), supervise graduate students, pursue a strong, innovative program in research and/or creative activities that is externally funded and that produces cutting-edge, high quality results/impact, and engage in service while advancing an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

The successful candidate must present evidence of: 
 

  • a strong emerging scholarly research and/or creative activity that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline. 
  • demonstrated potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, as evidenced by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
  • a commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and 
  • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department of Architectural Science and the University through collegial service.  
This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) [www.tfanet.ca]. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

Department of Architectural Science, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science

The Department of Architectural Science (DAS) is the only school in Canada that integrates studies in Architecture, Building Science, and Project Management. These areas are intertwined in the first three years of our undergraduate Bachelor of Architectural Science Honours Program. In the fourth year, students may choose to concentrate in one of these areas and further their education in one of our three graduate programs: Architecture (M.Arch, Ph.D.), Building Science (M.A.Sc., M.B.Sc., Ph.D.), and Project Management in the Built Environment (M.A.Sc. and M.P.M.). The Department supports nearly 600 students and provides access to many experiential learning opportunities, industry connections, networking events, collaborative projects, and an enriching series of public lectures and exhibitions - all in an intensely urban and culturally dynamic setting.
