Glenbow: A Museum Re-Imagined

This webinar is part of the RAIC 2023 Conference on Architecture, now available to stream!

Topics: History, Heritage and Culture

Length: 1 hour | What's Included: Video, Quiz, and Certificate of Completion

This session will be a curated presentation of re-imaging the Glenbow Museum. The design process has been 7 years in the making with construction starting in late summer of 2022. By the time of the conference the transformation will be well underway. The project is about working with an existing cast-in-place (almost brutalist) concrete building. The interventions within the building provide new ways of seeing the spaces and the collections, creating a building that is much more aware of its presence in the community and its responsibilities to the may communities that it serves. As architecture engages site, program, context and history, each building has the potential, and a responsibility, to express a greater, more inclusive cultural meaning. Whether new construction or renovation, it is through this exploration that we gain insight, and an understanding of ourselves and our time as being both more nuanced and more complex than possibly we ever imagined. Located at the corner of Stephen Avenue and 1st Street SE, Glenbow is as much about the public space as it is about the building. It is an anchor to the public realm of Stephen Avenue and Olympic Plaza and in physical partnership with Arts Commons and the Telus Convention Centre. A civically engaged Glenbow is at the heart of the cultural precinct of Calgary.

Learning Objectives:

By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the many sustainable benefits of renovating existing buildings as opposed to replacing them.
  • Describe the potentials and processes of contemporary GFRC in advanced building envelopes.
  • Recognize and discuss the advantages of reprogramming museum spaces to be more user focused and front of house.
  • Explain the concept of Threshold Anxiety and measures that this project has taken to overcome this phenomenon.
